With your chosen exercise, you can decide to remain in a fixed position for as long as comfortably possible, or alternatively perform small pulsing movements.

For your own safety, its best perform this method during the middle part of the exercise, rather than at the hardest point, as you may find either static or pulsing movements to difficult to return back to your starting position. Always work within your own fitness / strength limitations.
