Destroying Dreams
You decide to take a journey in your car, but don't want to add any additional fuel as you continual to work the engine. Not a problem until the fuel runs out, and then you start to ask yourself why you didn't refuel when you had a chance, as your stuck on the side of the road.
This is what will happen when you decide to go on a very low calorie diet, however your body will replace the car – and the food you have failed to eat is your fuel, you will have no energy and will simply feel tired and worn out.
When you stop eating, you're basically switching off your fuel supply, and beginning the downward spiral of self-destruction by using the body's most vital asset for calorie consumption – Lean Muscle Tissue.
If you don't eat your body will believe that there is no food around, and will aim to prevent your from starvation by doing the following:
1 Reducing your muscle tissue will reduce your metabolic rate (the amount of calories needed to function or perform when working or at rest). As your starvation process continues, you will soon become tired, weak, have poor skin and muscle tone and find performing normal tasks difficult due to a severe lack of energy for both your body's muscles and vital organs such as the brain.
When your car has a large engine, it will consume more fuel, if you replace the engine in a large car, with a smaller engine, the car will run, however it will struggle to get up the hills, just like you will struggle to climb the stairs.
The most important factor for reducing your body fat, is to keep and if possible increase your lean muscle tissue, this does not mean that you will be a mass of muscles, it simply means that you're a fat burning machine.
Very low calorie diets work at reducing body weight, with as much as 50% of this weight being a combination of muscle and organ tissue, as your body literally eats itself in a process called gluconeogenesis.
2 Store body-fat as this will provide a high-energy fuel source and insulation around the body, in order to keep the body warm and provide a long-term slow release of energy. This fat is normally stored around your middle, as it's easier for your body to carry this excess weight this way.
The less you eat the bigger the problem will become, as your bodyweight will actually lower, causing you to believe that your heading in the right direction, the truth is the total opposite – you've just joined the millions of so called yo–yo dieters, your weight may have been reduced – but so has your health and body shape.
Lowering your calorie intake will trigger the production of body fat storage, by an enzyme called Lipoprotein Lipase, which is designed to help your body store fat, whilst your fat burning enzymes will be reduced to help the process of fat storage.
3 Many people will complain that they are over weight simply because they have an under active thyroid gland. This may be the case, however it is often self-induced, as a low-level calorie diet will cause your thyroid to reduce the production of a hormone (T3), which is responsible for monitoring and increasing your metabolic rate. This will act like your car engine just ticking over, sounding like it will shut down at any minute.
4 Feed me – feed me, this is all you will be hearing in your mind, your body is screaming for food, whilst your will power is fighting against your bodies desire. There is no reason to place yourself through this kind of emotional mental anguish, your body needs feeding as its not getting its nutrients, not just your main food groups – fats – proteins – carbohydrates but also the micro-nutrients such as vitamins and minerals.
When you get food cravings, these are often caused because your body will desire the nutrients within the food – asking somebody to give up carbohydrate will have the same effect as asking a smoker to give up nicotine.
Regardless of your will power, there will be a time when your mad approach to weight loss collapses, and it is hear that all your problems will now begin.
